|Re:||CUPE agrees to binding arbitration|
Please distribute broadly.
We are very pleased that CUPE 3902 Unit 1 has agreed to move forward with binding arbitration and to end the strike by teaching assistants, course instructors, lab assistants, markers, graders and invigilators. Under this process, an independent, neutral third party, appointed by the Provincial Mediator, will arbitrate all matters that remain in dispute between CUPE 3902 Unit 1 and the University, and determine a final resolution that both parties will need to accept.
This decision to agree to arbitration means an effective and immediate end to the strike that began on February 27. The arbitrator will render his decision in due course. In the interim, while we await the arbitrator’s decision, CUPE 3902 Unit 1 members will return to work tomorrow, Friday, March 27.
Let us acknowledge that this has been a stressful time for faculty and students. We appreciate your patience and determination in supporting our students as they finish the term.
All of our efforts are now focused on ensuring our students finish the term and graduate.
