The University of Toronto is currently working to update its existing institutional Smoking Policy (1995). The proposed Smoke-Free Policy will ban smoking (including smoking and/or vaping of tobacco and cannabis) on all University property effective January 1, 2019. The proposed Policy will include an exemption for Indigenous ceremonial practices, and will permit consideration of requests for medical accommodations. The Policy is subject to Governing Council’s approval, which will be sought this fall.
If approved, the Smoke-Free Policy would apply to all staff, faculty, students, and visitors on University property.
The current Smoking Policy has not been updated since 1995. Since that time, there have been changes to smoking laws, including where smoking is permitted and the recent legalization of recreational cannabis. More information regarding the upcoming Smoke-Free Policy will be provided in the coming months.
