Celebrating & Recognizing Asian Heritage Month at the University of Toronto

In May, during Asian Heritage Month, the Division of Human Resources & Equity joins the University community in celebrating and recognizing the contributions of Canadians of Asian descent.

May was officially designated as Asian Heritage month by the Federal government in 2002 after having been celebrated across Canada since the 1990s. The 2020 Asian Heritage Month theme is Asian Canadians: United in Diversity.

People of Asian descent have made important contributions to Canadian heritage and identity. The impact of their contributions has led to advancements in the areas of politics, climate change, education, the arts, sports, science and many other areas, in Canada and globally.

Canada is proud of its diversity. Asian Canadians have socially and culturally enriched our communities and they continue to demonstrate resilience, challenge various forms of systemic discrimination and attitudinal barriers to inclusion. Asian Canadian history is an integral component of Canadian history highlighted this month and recognized throughout the year.
During the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen an increase in stigmatization, discrimination and xenophobia towards members of the East Asian community. The University community does not tolerate any form of discrimination towards our community members and remains committed to the values of equity, diversity and inclusion.

The Equity Offices on our three campuses are open and available to provide support to members of our community. We are dedicated to ensuring accessible equity support and services and uphold our commitment to confidentiality and privacy.

As a community, this month we have the opportunity to reflect on and examine our collective efforts, personal attitudes, practices and allyship to ensure we are working together to advance equity and inclusion at the institution and celebrate the rich history of Asian Canadians and the diaspora, and their contributions to our University.
