Employee Child Care needs in the event of an Ontario teachers’ strike

As you may know, the unions representing Ontario’s teachers are in bargaining with the provincial government and the Ontario school boards. In the event of any job action including potential rotating strikes, parents will be notified of closures through their local school boards’ communication channels.

With the possibility of a labour strike, we understand that many parents and caregivers may need to make alternative childcare arrangements. Parents with children attending a childcare centre located in a school should confirm with the childcare operator if they will remain open during a strike. On-campus childcare services will not be affected by Ontario teacher’s job action.

Within operational requirements, we ask that managers & supervisors be as accommodating as possible when considering requests for schedule flexibility from employees with childcare responsibilities – including personal days, lieu time, vacation days, and if applicable, shifted work schedules. We thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Child Care Support through Kids & Company:

We would like to remind employees that the University has an agreement with Kids & Company to provide backup childcare services for children ages 6 months to 12 years. All their GTA childcare locations are open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. U of T employees can purchase the backup service for $80 a day for a total of 5 days. More days may be available at an additional cost.

Should employees require alternative care for their children during a strike; Kids & Company has launched an online Back-Up Day Booking form to ensure booking child care is as efficient as possible. To book back-up child care, visit their website at www.kidsandcompany.com. Under the Corporate & Partner Services tab on their homepage, you will find “Back-Up Day Booking.” Once the form is submitted, a Kids & Company Enrollment Counsellor will respond with a confirmation and any next steps.

Should you have any questions, please call 1-866-MY-KIDCO, ‘option 2’ or email backup@kidsandcompany.com, and an Enrollment Counsellor will be happy to assist you.
