U of T’s Jodie Glean-Mitchell, champion of anti-racism education, wins 2020 BBPA Harry Jerome Diversity Award

Jodie Glean-Mitchell, U of T’s Director, Anti-Racism and Cultural Diversity Office (ARCDO), has been awarded the prestigious 2020 Black Business Professional Association (BBPA) Harry Jerome Diversity Award for her outstanding and inspirational work in promoting equity, diversity and inclusion in education.

Glean-Mitchell has dedicated her career to developing educational programming in the field of anti-racism, equity and inclusion. In her current role as director of ARCDO, she has already had many successes since assuming the role in March 2019. She is working collaboratively with community to initiate dialogues, identify and eliminate racial discrimination and advance racial equity. In her first year, the ARCDO team launched the inaugural Race, Equity & Action Speaker Series that hosts local and international experts, academics and advocates to advance conversations and understandings of racial equity, diversity and inclusion in postsecondary environments. Glean-Mitchell also enhanced ARCDO’s education programming for the university community with the support of the Centre for Learning, Leadership & Culture (LLC). During the 2019/2020 academic year, ARCDO hosted 40 education sessions reaching over 1400 participants, including staff, students, faculty, librarians and external community members.

“Glean-Mitchell’s work in the field of anti-racism, equity and inclusion at U of T has been exceptional,” said Karima Hashmani, executive director, equity, diversity & inclusion. “In addition to her accomplishments as director of ARCDO, she has managed to create a sense of belonging and communities of support for all our employees.”

Glean-Mitchell brings ten years of experience in the field of equity and inclusion at postsecondary institutions, including York University and Humber College, where she worked to advance discussions on anti-racism efforts. In 2017, Glean-Mitchell was the recipient of the Leadership in Learning Award from Canadian Association for the Prevention of Discrimination and Harassment in Higher Education. Presently, Glean-Mitchell is completing her PhD degree in Education at York University focusing on the experiences of equity offices and the engagement with anti-racism work in postsecondary institutions.

“Glean-Mitchell’s experience and knowledge of the complexities of anti-racism and cultural diversity have allowed her to create meaningful and responsive initiatives,” said Kelly Hannah-Moffat, vice-president, human resources & equity. “Her efforts and commitment will continue to play an important role in fostering inclusiveness at the university and in helping us learn how to act on our commitment to anti-racism.”

Established in 1983, the BBPA Harry Jerome Awards annually celebrate outstanding and inspirational individuals in the Black community. A highly valued achievement, BBPA Harry Jerome Awards recognize excellence in businesspeople, professionals, athletes, academics, artists and community leaders. Award recipients are selected from among Canada-wide nominees.

Glean-Mitchell will be honoured with the 2020 BBPA Harry Jerome Diversity Award at the formal dinner and awards gala on April 17, 2021.
